Super Nintendo vs. Sega Genesis

Both Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis were released in North America in 1991. Nintendo’s original entertainment system was very successful in North America, and Super Nintendo was set to pick up where the original Nintendo left off.

Where Nintendo had Mario as a mascot, Sega had Sonic the hedge hog. With his hip attitude and quickness, he was marketed to seem "cooler" than Mario. This led to a wider success for the Genesis and would eventually propel Sega to 65% of the market in North America.

But that’s was only for a brief time. With strong market competition from Sony’s Playstation and Nintendo, Sega no longer makes consoles. Sega is still around, but today they focus all of their resources on gaming.

Ultimately Nintendo won.

  1. In the past, I have played both of these game systems, but I never owned Super Nintendo. I had a Sega Genesis. Sonic was one of the best games for Sega. It was one of the more popular games that Sega had. Another good game for Sega was Paperboy. Even though it was simple, it was so much fun. I also remember the games not working and having to blow into the cartridge to get them to work. I guess dust or dirt got on the chips. Super Nintendo had Mario games which are timeless. This is why Nintendo is still making game systems while Sega is only making games. Nintendo will continue to have success as they advance their gaming technology.

  2. Art:I believe video games can be a form of art and should not go unnoticed. In an article published in MIT's Technology Review called "Art Form for the Digital Age," film scholar Henry Jenkins criticized Kroll for dramatically underestimating the potential of video games.
Science: An assuming site to visit the gaming industry and the deal behind it.

Society: People use games to learn also such as learning how to fly, learning math, and learning how stay healthy by exercising.

  3. I don't know if I would say that Nintendo won, at least overall. During the third generation the Nintendo 64 did beat out the SEGA Saturn. During the second generation it was a draw. Nintendo had the more family friendly games while SEGA had the more violent games. One interesting fact is that Sony had originally wanted to partner with Nintendo to have the Nintendo PlayStation, an add-on to the super Nintendo.

  4. Although I agree that Nintendo ultimately won, I don't think that the Sega Genesis was a failure. It was a huge debate on which one you owned. Just like in today's age of which system you own, Xbox 360 or PS3. You wouldn't say that either one is going to win or lose on that one, because both companies are making millions of dollars. Socially, the Nintendo offered and will always offer a party system, where you can get together with your friends and play the games and enjoy them. This was a great post. I love that debate.

  5. Yeah I agree as well that Nintendo eventually won because of future consoles, but back then Sega did have more popularity. Everyone knows Sonic the Hedgehog because of the Sega Genesis. I remember playing sonic as well back in the day, it was definitely one my favorite games I've ever played. There was just something about that game that could keep you occupied for hours.
