Nintendo

Everyone knows the word Nintendo, but does everyone remember Nintendo? Not DS or Wii, but the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

Nintendo was released in North America, Europe and Australia in 1985. It is heralded as the best-selling gaming console of its time. Nintendo set the standard for consoles in everything from game design to the controller layout which is still used today by many other gaming consoles. With games like Mario Bros., Zelda, Double Dragon and Paper Boy it revolutionized gaming.

Nintendo was at the forefront of gaming technology in the 1980’s, with games like Duck Hunt, that used an electronic gun to shoot ducks on the screen. The ducks appear one or two at a time and the player has to shoot them down for points. I even remember playing a game called Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, where you play as Michael Jackson himself, and he has to rescue kidnapped children to advance to the next stage.

The worlds first video gaming console, the Magnavox Odyssey. This large nightmare of wires and plastic was the coolest back in 1972 when it was first introduced. The Odyssey had 24 games that people could play, and each game was a crazy looking cartridge with large pieces of metal sticking out of a black casing. their was no labels of the cartridges of the game just a number. Now heres the fun about the game. in order to play a game, the owner would have to have a TV size 18" to 24" and thats it nothing more or less. The screen for the game, was a piece of plastic the user had to place the screen. Check this link's out, to better understand the odyssey and just about gaming in general. Their pretty long videos, their funny videos, and be warned now before you click them that their is extreme language that one might not like. however the videos are good their artsy, it has to do with science and society hope you like them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X58CdkLVr6A&feature=fvw #1

Board Games vs Electronic Games

I remember the day and age about 20 years ago, where handheld games were cool. Also, there was a time, where family gathered around the table to play Yahtzee! or Trivial Pursuit. It was a routine for our family to head to the shore and wouldn't you know, the grown-ups would sit around the table with their adult beverages and play Trivial Pursuit. I wasn't a grown-up, therefore, I was sent to bed. Those simpler days have long been gone. Who has time now to sit around and play board games when you can be doing other more important things. I remember my first handheld game. It was the Sega GameGear. It had color and the buttons were simple. Only issue was it needed a ton of batteries, some things never change. Nowadays, you can have video games that are full of old time board games. I couldn't tell you how many board games were haulted by a disgruntled teen, clearing everything off the board. RISK, in my opinion, was one of the best strategy games ever devised. Needless to say, there weren't many games completed because those tiny armies would go flying off the board!! Take a look at just Trivial Pursuit alone, how many different versions there are!! http://www.hasbro.com/trivialpursuit/anniversary/

The Arcade- That's where all the cool kids play

It dosent matter who you are, what your age is or what town you came from, we all remember the Arcade. As long as you had quarters in your pocket, it was game on. So many games to play... there was Pong, Pac-Man, Frogger, Donkey Kong and many other classics. Then there were my personal favorites, Mortal Combat and Street Fighter. To me it did'nt matter which one I was in front of, as long as I had quarters, I was there with a joystick in my left hand and used my right hand to button smash.

The heyday of the Arcade has come and gone, but for me it will always be the place where all the cool kids play.

PlayStation (one)- Some dates and Memories

PlayStation, according to computerandvideogames.com's article of the "100 Best Moments of PlayStation, it first launched in Japan on December 3, 1994 and the launch batch sold out in one day! It is also labeled, at the time, as being Sony's best product since the Walkman- which was introduced in the 1970's.
PlayStation become available( according to absolute-playstation.com) to us and arrived in stored, in North America, on September 6,1995. This doesn't seem too long ago, but for me it feels like forever. I'm 21 and this game came out when I was 7 years old about to be 8.
It was then released in the UK and Europe on September 29, 1995 (my 8th Birthday!)
"By, January 1996, PlayStation's worldwide availability makes it a global phenomenon, shifting 3.4 million units globally- some 518,00 of those in Europe."(computerandvideogames.com)
During my research, I came across something that some may remember, The Society Against PlayStation- "This series of adverts, that featured boffins warning us of the dangers of PlayStation, launched what would first be impressive, controversial yet never dull TV as campaigns for Sony. This was kind of rubbish, but it did the job- and its" never underestimate the power of PlayStation" tageline entered the public vocabulary." HaHa. People did get pretty rowdy about video game violence, I remember in 5th grade writing those famous "How do you feel about video game violence and what should be done about it" papers. But think about how it is today, the games that kids and I mean little kids, play on a regular basis. They are violent with a capital V. And who supplies them with these games? Their parents, guardians, older siblings.. But that's a topic for a different day.
By January 1998, " At least 400 PlayStation games are now available to buy in Europe, with a bewildering 1,150 out of Japan. 200 million PlayStation games have been sold worldwide." I didn't have my PSone until I was like 11 years old but I do remember all my favorite games. Such games as: Gran Turismo, Ape Escape, Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot (which i played religiously), this really weird game that me and my dad went head to head on- Worms Armageddon, Dino Crisis, Driver, Frogger, Need for Speed, Resident Evil (which scared the crap out of me, but still loved), Tony Hawk (endless hours doing stunts and tricks), a game me and my cousins loveddd to play- Twisted Metal, WWF Warzone ( yes during this time I was a HUGE wrestling fan) and so on.

Feel free to comment and add some other memorable PSone games that I may not have mentioned- I'd love to hear them.
